The compositon is effective because the four main focal points – the fish, the eyeball lamp, the star, and the sleeping face – draw your eye around the piece. The eye of the fish and the lamp eye being open and then the star and the sleeping face’s eye being closed also give this sense of balance between the upper half of the picture and the lower. Each main feature is also distinctive from each other in marks – the lamp eyeball has thick, dark lines and stands out as the most intense part of the composition. Diagonally to the left of it is the sleeping face, drawn in thin, soft lines. Though the star and the fish have similar lines, the fish is surronded by white space, whereas the star is surronded by black space. This gives them the sense of appearing very different from each other.

As for what could be improved…I am going back and forth as I look at the composition if I think it would be better with less sketchy lines in some places and more definition or if the sketchy, incomplete lines tie into the dreamlike theme. I find it very interesting that the most defined part of the drawing is the eyeball-lamp, and that the least defined is the sleeping face. It’s like a nod to how when you’re dreaming the dream feels like the most real thing and reality fades away into almost nothing. So, to be honest, I am really not sure what is the better choice. I leave it in Chloe’s capable hands!

Although, I can say with confidence I think more definition on the builidng on the bottom right could be effective; at the moment I struggle with seeing how the builidng relates to the rest of the picture. I think some more details or something added to the walls of it could tie it into the rest of the composition.

All in all, I really adore this piece! It is structurally pleasing, interesting to look at, and there are a variety of marks that make it distinctive.

    Best,
    Dre
