I was drawn to this piece right away when I was in class because I got to see how it was set up. I liked how this piece was layered. The top piece is slightly transparent, which allows you to then see the other swirling dark layers below it. I like how the shading is not on the top layer and your eyes are then drawn to other parts of the piece. The hands provide a nice contrast to the darker swirling layers. They have a softer or more muted tone in comparison to the more frantic layers of the swirls. I think there is a good use of blacks, greys and whites. I feel there is a full range of tones, which are really well done on the hands. The artist wanted to do more layering, but I think that there is enough layering done. Perhaps in the last corner, in the bottom left part of the image, they could add a bit more design there because it does feel like it cuts off a little suddenly.

  2. In Isabelle’s drawing called “Egypt” I really enjoy the use of line work in this piece and the direction of the lines. The swirls in the body add visual contrast and interest to the piece, the shading is well placed and draws the eye as well as the lines. I believe the the placement of the body works well and the hands placed around give me an almost uneasy feeling. As a viewer I feel like I’m almost feeling the uncomfortable emotions the woman in the drawing is experiencing. The torn papers add visual interest while still maintaining the overall narrative of the piece. “Egypt” was one of my favorite drawings of the semester and can’t wait to see more.
